What flush finish actually means
Flush finish is our term for a Level 4 finish under AS 2589, the accepted standard for residential construction. Joints, screw lines and internal corners are built up over a three-coat system, sanded smooth and free of tool marks, so the plasterboard reads as one continuous surface rather than a sheet of panels.
What a Level 4 finish is suited to
A properly executed flush finish is the right standard for flat, matt or low-sheen light-coloured paint, which covers the great majority of residential walls and ceilings. It's not a lesser finish; it's the correct, code-recognised standard for the job it's specified for.
Control joints and movement
Larger sheets and long runs move with temperature and structural settlement. We install control joints where spans call for them so the flush finish doesn't crack along a joint line six months after handover.
When flush finish isn't enough
Feature walls, dark or gloss paint, and light at an acute angle from skylights or LED strips will show through a standard flush finish. That's where a Level 5 finish comes in: the same jointing process taken further with a full skim coat.
